UCalgary Scholars' Advantage Room Tour - Best Residence in Canada?

If you're a first year prestige award winner at UCalgary, you have the opportunity to join the Scholars' Advantage community: a special floor of residence at UCalgary for prestige award winners. The community has a very limited number of rooms, each one spacious and comfortable like a hotel room. Plus, you get a monthly cleaning service to keep your room tidy (as do other residents in International House)!
Let's start with

The Living Area

The couch is comfy and also doubles as a pull-out bed for overnight guests. There's also a small kitchenette in the room with a mini-fridge and microwave as well as several storage spaces.

Facing the couch is a 32" TV and a nice armchair. I used the TV to watch shows and also host party games such as Jackbox.

The Washroom

To the left of the living room is the washroom. Unfortunately, I didn't get a photo of the washroom but it's pretty big and there's a sink, toilet, and bathtub. You'll have plenty of room to get ready in the morning or relax in the evening.

The Bedroom

Now for the bedroom, where there is a (excessive but welcome) king bed - sorry for the mess:

The bedding is provided by residence so you don't have to bring your own (although if you're a picky sleeper, you may prefer to bring your own if you don't sleep well in hotel bedding).

Not pictured but to the left of the bed there is a closet, mirror, desk and chair, and dresser. There's a lot of space to store clothes and other belongings. Facing the bed is also another 32" TV... yes, there are two TVs.

Some of the rooms have a slightly different layout with a larger living area where the desk is located, and a smaller bedroom, but they're pretty much the same.

Conclusion

Overall, I had a great time living in the Scholars' Advantage community - not just because of the rooms, but because of the amazing people I met on the floor (granted, I think anyone living on residence will probably make meaningful connections with their floormates). Also I want to give a shoutout to our CA (community ambassador) for organizing the best residence events and making us feel welcome from the first day!

It is a once in a lifetime opportunity if you do get a first year prestige scholarship, but not worth losing too much sleep over because your overall university experience will probably be the same whichever residence you end up living in.

I will miss you, big bed, and probably will never have another like you again... oh well :)

Every year around June, IKEA hosts a Midsummer Buffet full of fish, meatballs, salad, and more. You have to be an IKEA Family member (which is free) and buy a $25 ticket in person on a previous day. I attended the Calgary buffet, and here is my full review!

5 Things to do Before the UCalgary Semester Starts

I know, I know... summer is almost over already and it feels like it's barely started. Regardless, it's only a bit more than a week before classes start again (less if you're doing Block Week, which I tried last year ), so here are some reminders before the school year begins. Set up your calendar For UCalgary students, download your class times through the D2L portal and  import your them to your preferred service (mine is Outlook) : Personally, I like to colour code and label lectures/tutorials/labs separately on my calendar like so: Of course, many people also just take a screenshot of their timetable and set it as a wallpaper or save it somewhere easy to access; that can work too :). Put in your Course Overload Request(s) This is a pretty urgent and important one: make sure you check your degree requirements. If you're still waitlisted or not enrolled for a course that you need  to take this year, then you should submit a course overload request ASAP. At UCalgary fo...

My Study Abroad "Girl Math(s)"

For the unitiated, "Girl Math" is when you justify spending money as saving money by jumping through a few mental hoops - such as by spending an extra $15 on Amazon to get free shipping. So as a lighthearted and slightly helpful financial overview of my exchange experience from UCalgary to Oxford Brookes University, here are some Girl Math examples I thought about during my study abroad experience. If you exchange to a university with tuition more expensive than your home university, you're getting a great deal Living in student accommodation is $30/night versus a minimum $100/night hotel, and you get a free transit pass, so it's a super discounted vacation! Visiting a free museum in the UK is worth $30 equivalent in Canada. So visit many! Every $400 trip to another country basically saves $1000+ in flights that you'd have to pay to take that trip from Canada If you get a study abroad scholarship, that's free money that you wouldn't get otherwise  Eating l...
