Reviewing CoCo's New Floral Tea Lattes

Like many uni students, coffee helps me get through my courses, but now that it's summer, something more refreshing and seasonal is a welcome change. I had the chance to try some floral tea lattes, courtesy of CoCo in Chinatown Calgary, and here's my review.

Firstly, the location is quite nice with a spacious seating area and large windows for a nice view.

Service was fast, and the employees were friendly. You can also leave your mark in the store by drawing something on a sticky note and leaving it on a wall (there were definitely some interesting ones...)

Now for the actual drinks:

Pretty cups!

The available flavours are jasmine (green tea), osmanthus (oolong tea), and rose (black tea).

Each of them have quite subtle, but distinctive flavours. I chose to have no sugar in my drinks, so they can be a healthy option!

The jasmine latte was more earthy than the others, and it also felt like the strongest. At first sip, there was the refreshing taste of milk and grassiness. Afterward, the earthy flavour lingers, with some floral notes in the background.

The osmanthus latte was a little more forward with its floral tones and had some natural sweetness. It was also quite fresh, with a slightly fruity aftertaste.

The rose latte was the most floral of all, with nice smoothness and a hint of sourness. It's very aromatic, yet a bit more faint on the tastebuds. The black tea body can be felt in the background.

I had a pretty hard time choosing my favourite, but I think I most enjoyed the osmanthus tea as it offered a nice balance between green and black tea flavours.

Each of the teas also comes with cream and ground walnuts on top, a nice touch that I found myself using as a sort of "palate refresher" between sips.

I also tried their most popular item, the brown sugar bubble tea, which can be ordered with less sugar (of course, not entirely sugar-free!).  The large cups felt more generous compared to some other bubble tea stores, and the pearls had a nice chewiness without being too hard, which I sometimes encounter.

Overall, the new menu items are quite light and pleasant (Miam Miam!). I think the floral tea lattes are more refreshing than an iced coffee latte on a hot summer's day, and are also a good coffee alternative for non-drinkers. Of course, they're not as caffeinated, so I think this is more of a midday-or-later treat if you do enjoy some daily coffee.

Plus, they’re currently on sale for $4.99 (I appreciate their frequent promotions), making it a good time to try them out.

Until next time!

Ana

  1. I pass this place almost everyday because it's at a very busy crossing center and 3rd Ave. Always thought the place looks cute. Now I have got to try. Thank you!

IKEA Yearly Midsummer Buffet 2024 Review

Every year around June, IKEA hosts a Midsummer Buffet full of fish, meatballs, salad, and more. You have to be an IKEA Family member (which is free) and buy a $25 ticket in person on a previous day. I attended the Calgary buffet, and here is my full review!

Rating my Experience in Each of my First Year Courses (CS/CPSC @ UCalgary)

Fall CPSC 231 (Intro to CS with Python), Required - This course was a nice introduction to the basics of programming with Python. It was fairly easy for me since I had some prior experience with coding, but I think it would be manageable for beginners too. The only downside was that the assignments were graded by a computer program, so even a minor mistake like a typo or a missing comma could lower your mark significantly. I heard that this course is better organized and taught than CPSC 217, which is the online version of it. I would give this course a 7/10 because it was good but not very challenging. PHIL 279 (Logic and Proofs), Required - This course was pretty interesting and different. It teaches you how to use logic and mathematical symbols to construct and evaluate arguments, and it required a certain way of thinking that was not intuitive at first. I took the online assessment version of the course, which gave me more flexibility but also required more self-disci...

UCalgary Tech Recruiting w/ BobaTalks’ Jeff Nguyen

While this isn’t quite a tech blog, this post should have some important insights for any UCalgary students interested in a tech career. After seeing that  Jeff Nguyen , a recruiter in the student space, founder of BobaTalks (which provides free mentorship for students), and prolific "LinkedInfluencer" (the good kind) was going to have a booth at  CalgaryHacks 2025 , I knew I had to reach out. As someone deeply involved in both student mentorship and tech recruiting, he seemed like the perfect person to chat with about student recruiting, starting with how UCalgary students can stand out in the job market.  Q: UCalgary has good computer science courses and fantastic clubs. Even so, many students here find it tough to break into big or even mid-sized tech companies because there's not a lot of direct access to recruiters. What's your take on the best way for students in a market like ours to get noticed? Jeff : I believe that computer science is one of those fields wh...
