Reviewing 3-Course Peking Duck at Ginger Beef Bistro House

Next to Landmark Cinemas in Calgary's Country Hills, you'll find a casual Chinese eatery housed in a classic suburban building with red accents. Though Ginger Beef was invented in Calgary, it originated at the Silver Inn and not the Ginger Beef Bistro House.

But that doesn’t take away from its charm... step inside, and you’re greeted by the warm buzz of Cantonese and Mandarin conversations. The air is filled with the aromas of dim sum and a variety of Chinese dishes, making it clear this place is the real deal.

Part of what makes it feel like the real deal? The service isn't like your typical Calgary restaurant. It's efficient, but don't expect anyone to check in on you. In my opinion, that's not a big problem, but maybe something most people aren't expecting.

Also, the duck deal only has Chinese writing on it - luckily you have this blog post to inform you about it ;).

We ordered the 3-course Peking duck promotion, which at the time of this writing, costs $48.95. It seems like there are a few different ways to order multi-course Peking duck here, so make sure you're getting the one you want!

The first course arrived soon after, and was a variation of seafood soup, also containing duck and mushrooms. Personally, I love enoki mushrooms, so I really enjoyed this soup. It has subtle flavours of duck and fish, and really warms your belly. In my opinion, it benefits a lot from some chili sauce, which you can ask for at no extra charge.

Then came the titular (and mouthwatering) second course: Peking duck. It's always a fun time making your own little wraps, and the skin was deliciously crispy while the meat was juicy.

The sweet sauce really brings together the freshness of the spring onions and cucumber with the gaminess of the duck. My only nitpick is that I would've liked a bit more of the veggies to balance out the meat.

Finally, there was a yummy noodle stir-fry with some veggies and duck. To be honest, this dish definitely had way more noodles than anything else, so I would have been disappointed with it as a standalone dish, but it did feel good to indulge in a bunch of carbs after the previous two courses...

There was more in here, but I forgot to take a pic before eating

Overall, for something that has a good amount of delicious duck and can feed three people (maybe two ravenous people), I think this is an amazing deal.

So, as I like to say - MIAM MIAM MIAM! Let me know your thoughts if you give it a try, or share your take on the other Peking duck options around Calgary :).

Bon appétit and until next time,

Ana

5 Things to do Before the UCalgary Semester Starts

I know, I know... summer is almost over already and it feels like it's barely started. Regardless, it's only a bit more than a week before classes start again (less if you're doing Block Week, which I tried last year ), so here are some reminders before the school year begins. Set up your calendar For UCalgary students, download your class times through the D2L portal and  import your them to your preferred service (mine is Outlook) : Personally, I like to colour code and label lectures/tutorials/labs separately on my calendar like so: Of course, many people also just take a screenshot of their timetable and set it as a wallpaper or save it somewhere easy to access; that can work too :). Put in your Course Overload Request(s) This is a pretty urgent and important one: make sure you check your degree requirements. If you're still waitlisted or not enrolled for a course that you need  to take this year, then you should submit a course overload request ASAP. At UCalgary fo...

My Study Abroad "Girl Math(s)"

For the unitiated, "Girl Math" is when you justify spending money as saving money by jumping through a few mental hoops - such as by spending an extra $15 on Amazon to get free shipping. So as a lighthearted and slightly helpful financial overview of my exchange experience from UCalgary to Oxford Brookes University, here are some Girl Math examples I thought about during my study abroad experience. If you exchange to a university with tuition more expensive than your home university, you're getting a great deal Living in student accommodation is $30/night versus a minimum $100/night hotel, and you get a free transit pass, so it's a super discounted vacation! Visiting a free museum in the UK is worth $30 equivalent in Canada. So visit many! Every $400 trip to another country basically saves $1000+ in flights that you'd have to pay to take that trip from Canada If you get a study abroad scholarship, that's free money that you wouldn't get otherwise  Eating l...
